Welcome to the first ever Shore Report audio feature… something we’ll be doing a lot more of, because we know you all consume your news and media in all sorts of different ways every day.

THANK YOU to everyone who subscribed to Shore Report after our first issue was released. You’ve shown us there is a real interest for this kind of coverage and focus on local government. We’ve started here with short print stories, but are likely to expand into longer investigative pieces, podcasting (like this!), and video as well. There’s already a heftier piece on north shore public health care needs and concerns in the works, so stay tuned for that.

In the first issue you read about warnings of a door-to-door salesperson scam in Garden River First Nation… though really when you think about it, that’s a good heads up for anyone in any of our communities. We covered the Sault Ste. Marie City Council’s decision not to pursue a speed limit increase to 110 km/hr on the section of Hwy 17 between Thessalon and Sault Ste. Marie, 1500 new trees set to be planted along trail routes in Blind River, a Boundary Claim engagement session at Thessalon First Nation, and believe it or not two — count them two — Greater Sudbury City Councillors reprimanded by that city’s Integrity Commissioner in just one meeting of City Council… that has to be some kind of record, no?

Plus, a whole bunch of other bits of local news, and we even managed to squeeze in a moon report for all you night skywatchers out there when a particularly gorgeous waxing gibbous moon took over the darkness last week. Keep an eye out for this week’s Super Full Harvest Moon. Tuesday night will probably be our best bet there, as it will only be partly cloudy. Might get some nice photos that evening.

At Shore Report, we’ll continue to share some stories for free as we build our audience, but let me make a request that you convert to a paid subscription as soon as possible for the full experience. We believe that local media coverage is a valuable asset worth paying for… and, hey, we’re very reasonably priced. Hope you agree.

Please subscribe now (and tell your friends and neighbours to subscribe as well!). If you’ve already subscribed to the free feed, please understand that at some point soon much of our best content is going behind the paywall. You can adjust your subscription right on the newsletter itself. Just hit any one of those subscription information buttons sprinkled throughout, and that’ll take you to where you can manage your current subscription. Heck, if you want, it even gives you the option to gift someone else a sub to our publication.

The next issue — the October 2024 issue — of Shore Report is in the works, and we have some meaty content for you coming up. A little sneak peek here…

We are looking into recent drinking water issues on Manitoulin Island; what our north shore region stands to lose with the disappearance of the Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing federal riding as we head toward the next election; and an intriguing local initiative calling out the provincial government for downloading much of the cost of health care delivery to our strained local municipal budgets and individual property tax payers. All that and more coming up in the October issue.

You can look for that issue at the end of this month.

I’ve always thought September and October are the most beautiful months on Huron’s north shore. I hope you haven’t passed up an opportunity to be outside enjoying our fabulous part of Canada to listen to this, and I do hope you’ll keep coming back… to Shore Report. Thanks everyone.
