Liberals defy polls in Sault Ste. Marie, but lose Sudbury East—Manitoulin—Nickel Belt

Running against recent polling, Liberal incumbent Terry Sheehan held off a strong challenge from former Police Chief Hugh Stevenson in the redistricted riding Sault Ste. Marie—Algoma. And the opposite happened on the other end of the region where Conservative challenger Jim Belanger unseated incumbent Marc Serré in the redistricted Sudbury East—Manitoulin—Nickel Belt. Meanwhile, the governing Liberals held Sudbury with a comfortable margin of victory for incumbent Viviane Lapointe.
The federal NDP, holders of the former Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing riding, were reduced to seven seats nationally. Shore Report will be speaking with former MP Carol Hughes this week to hear her thoughts on 17 years in Parliament representing the North Shore.
